Greek President visits Libya to meet with Gadhafi.

March 13, 2006, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 56 seconds ago

By Andnetwork .com

Greek President Karolos Papoulias made a groundbreaking visit to Libya, where he was to meet leader Moammar Gadhafi and other top officials in a two-day visit.

Papoulias said his visit opened «a new chapter in Greek-Libyan relations. ».  Athens has traditionally good relations with the Arab world.

It angered the U.S. by maintaining ties with Libya during Greece's Socialist-dominated 1980s - when Papoulias held senior foreign ministry posts and Washington and Tripoli were at loggerheads, primarily over the North African nation's alleged support for terrorism.

«I am very happy to return to Libya, where I have very good friends Papoulias said on his arrival.

Libya is the top market for Greek products in the Arab world, with imports of US$197 million (€165 million) in 2005. Libyan exports to Greece - mostly oil - were worth US$762 million (€639million) last year.

«I don't think there's a single car in Greece that circulates without Libyan petrol, » Prime Minister Baghdadi el-Mahmoudi said after meeting Papoulias.

Papoulias is the first Greek head of state to visit Libya since Gadhafi seized power in a 1969 coup. He follows on the heels of Western leaders -including British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac - who visited this oil-rich state after 11 years of U.N. sanctions were lifted in 2003.

Libya's proven oil reserves are the ninth largest in the world, while vast areas remain unsurveyed for new deposits. Since the country emerged from international isolation by agreeing to scrap its secret nuclear weapons program and compensate victims of terrorist attacks, western firms have rushed to sign exploration deals.

This month, an international consortium that includes Greece's largest refinery group - state-run Hellenic Petroleum - began drilling in the Sirt Basin, 370 kilometers (230 miles) west of Tripoli.

Papoulias and el-Mahmoudi stressed the importance of further cooperation in the energy sector.

«It's very important that the political will for such cooperation was expressed Hellenic Petroleum chairman Efthymios Christodoulou said in Libya. Two exploratory sites «appear to have good potential, » Christodoulou added, but gave no details.

Australia's Woodside Petroleum, Spain's Repsol and Hellenic Petroleum are targeting a 20,000-square-kilometer (7,722-square-mile) area with an estimated potential of 35 billion barrels of oil - an amount close to Libya's total proven reserves of 39 billion barrels.

Papoulias is accompanied by Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis, the deputy ministers of foreign affairs and finance and a group of Greek businessmen.
